Bulgarian Evening and Short Courses

The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies will run Bulgarian language and culture courses.

Application for Summer culture course NOW OPEN

Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe, with the longest continuing name since establishment. Bulgarian history and heritage are rich and diverse, and the Bulgarian language is a Slavic language of mixed origins. It is one of the official EU languages since 2007.

Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria, and is one of the official languages of the European Union (since 2007). Bulgarian is spoken by an estimated 7.9 million people, including the Bulgarian historical communities in North Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Albania and Greece.

In the republic of Ireland there are over 4,000 Bulgarian speakers (as recorded in the Census of Population 2022, compiled by the Central Statistics Office).

Courses are run in Bulgarian language at the Beginners, Lower Intermediate, and Intermediate/Advanced levels, depending on demand.

As part of our summer evening course programme, a culture-focused course, Modern Bulgarian History and Culture will be offered in June 2026.

Modern Bulgarian History and Culture (PDF)

This course offers a broad overview of Bulgarian history and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a special focus on the narrative arts of fiction and cinema. The course aims to familiarise participants with Bulgaria and the vibrant and diverse region of South-Eastern Europe by inviting them to explore a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts (in English translation), as well as by screening films and discussing some landmarks of the visual arts and architecture. It is through the prism of these products of culture and some major historical figures that we will be investigating some key moments of the past which continue to shape Bulgarian identity in the present.

Duration: The course runs for 4 weekly classes of 2.5 hours class time for a total 10 hours course.

Time and Place: Classes take place on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 8pm from 3rd - 24th June 2026. Please see the specific schedule in the attached enrolment information below. All the classes will take place on College campus in Dublin city centre. Learners will receive venue information closer to the course commencement date.

Course Fee: €150 This fee is non-refundable once the course has commenced.

Course Dates: Class dates/times are subject to minor changes in rare circumstances and students will be given the maximum notice possible if this unlikely situation arises.
