Doctoral Thesis Summary

I study the drivers of trends and country differences in ‘who marries whom’ in terms of education – a social change that can have fundamental consequences for social inequalities between and within couples. In my doctoral thesis, I develop a counterfactual decomposition technique that allows analysing to what extent trends and differences in ‘who marries whom’ are driven by changes in structural opportunities (women’s and men’s educational attainment) and the degree of non-randomness by which men and women sort into marriages.
