Jamie Rohu

Jamie is a research fellow on the Twelve Bogs project. This two-year fellowship began in September 2024 and will lead to the publication of a monograph. It is co-funded by Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland and the National Parks & Wildlife Service through the enterprise partnership scheme.

Jamie critically explores how people relate to and value Ireland’s peatlands. His work is informed by political ecology, landscape rehabilitation, environmental history and just transition literatures. Jamie completed his PhD Sustainable Bogs: Challenges in Transition in 2022 at Trinity’s department of geography. Twelve Bogs builds off his investigations into how state institutions manage peatlands demarcated Special Areas of Conservation under the European Union’s Habitats Directive.

The Twelve Bogs project considers a dozen unique peatlands across Ireland through time. The means by which the state manages these landscapes has social and ecological implications. Following the completion of this study, policymakers can implement its recommendations in order to develop collaborative decision-making approaches with communities and land owners. This should minimise conflict between stakeholders and help Ireland meet its internationally agreed environmental objectives in a just and equitable manner.
