Network Member Profiles

The four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, have persisted as a core component of human thought and understanding regarding the nature of the universe and natural environment since the time of Aristotle. Members of the Irish Environmental History Network are grouped according to their choice of one or more of four broad themes that mirror the four elements, reflecting the diverse research expertise and interests of Network Members.

  • Earth includes the study of the landscape, its development through time and interactions with humanity.
  • Air includes the study of the atmosphere and meteorology, and in the impact of weather and climate on humanity.
  • Fire includes the study of means of energy generation adopted by humanity in the past, and their use of fire and energy to affect changes in the natural world.
  • Water includes the study of inland waterways and water bodes, the seas and ocean and marine environments, and how humans have adapted to and exploited these environments.
