William Nolan, University College Dublin.

Biography

William Nolan photoWilliam Nolan is Emeritus Professor of Geography, University College Dublin. Over the course of his career, he has lectured in diverse topics in geography in many third level institutions in Ireland, including the National University of Ireland, Galway, and University College Dublin, securing a permanent lectureship there in 1989. Under the supervision of Professor Tom Jones Hughes, he completed his PhD thesis in University College Dublin in 1975, entitled The Historical Geography of the Ownership and Occupation of Land in the Barony of Fassadinin, Kilkenny, c.1600-1850. This was later published in 1979 as Fassadinin: Land, Settlement and Society in Southeast Ireland c.1600-1850. Prof. Nolan is the founder (in 1975) of Geography Publications , specialising in works of Irish regional history, geography and biography. It's most ambitious venture is the County History & Society Series, of which Prof. Nolan is Series Editor. This series endeavours to assemble a library of interdisciplinary county histories for all of Ireland. Each volume comprises a collection of specialist essays arranged chronologically and based wherever possible on the entity of the county. By incorporating the work of both academic specialists and local scholars, each volume provides a comprehensive insight into the character of its study area. The series provides a fundamental starting point from which to explore the history and geography of Ireland, from prehistory to the present. The 25th volume in this series, focusing on Co. Monaghan, will be published in 2017.
