My specific expertise is in experimental and computational thermal sciences. I have 30 years experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics and applied energy research in Ireland, France, Canada and parts of Africa. I am the author of over 100 peer reviewed journal papers. Also author of many technical reports for industry, business and professional organisations and 5 patents. In-line with national and global energy priorities, myself and my team perform research that specifically targets the critical need for improved energy efficiency of thermal energy transport and conversion technologies as well as developing novel clean energy devices. The research underpins the rational use of energy with regard to the reduction of energy use as well as clean generation with their consequent reduction of green house gas emissions. To achieve this, the research focuses on both the fundamental science of enhanced heat transfer as well as innovative systems level engineering of clean technologies for biomass, geothermal, solar thermal, energy storage and waste heat recovery applications.Currently, my research focusses on electronics cooling and energy management, dealing with the escalating power densities and energy demand of compute systems in HPC, data centres and the edge.

Research Expertise
My research has evolved from fundamental thermal-fluid science towards using that understanding to design, optimise and deploy advanced thermal technologies. The scientific foundation remains heat transfer and fluid mechanics, particularly two-phase flow, boiling and evaporation, interfacial phenomena and thermal management. This has developed into a sustained international research programme, including extensive ESA microgravity activity and long-standing international collaborations, while increasingly translating fundamental understanding into engineering systems and technologies.
A defining feature has been the coordinated use of simulation and experiment. Beginning with numerical model development during my PhD, I subsequently applied computational methods alongside experiments to investigate fundamental phenomena including solidification, bubble dynamics and Marangoni flows. My computational research has evolved in step with advances in computing power and simulation capability, from bespoke numerical modelling to simulation-driven design and optimisation of complex engineering systems. Modelling is now used to interrogate design spaces, identify governing physical and geometric parameters and predict performance; experiments provide targeted validation and address physics or uncertainties not adequately captured computationally. This approach has enabled progression from fundamental understanding through engineering design to validated technologies, patents and commercial products.
My current research increasingly addresses the thermal challenges of high power density technologies, particularly electronics, HPC, AI and data centre systems. It encompasses advanced liquid cooling, jet impingement, heat pipes and thermal interfaces, together with additive manufacturing and optimisation of thermal-fluid components and systems. The programme combines international collaboration, researcher development and industrial engagement with demonstrated translation from fundamental research to intellectual property, products and deployment. It represents the continuing evolution of a research programme spanning fundamental and applied research; simulation and experiment; academic discovery and industrial translation.

TitleA novel device to control in situ the thermal gelation and concentration of cell-seeded hydrogelsSummaryIt is believed that injuries to cartilage predispose a person to osteoarthritis in later life and eventually to a requirement for joint replacement surgery. Injectable chondrocyte-seeded hydrogels can potentially be used to fill cartilage defects with a functional repair tissue. Ensuring that the hydrogel has the appropriate mechanical properties in situ (e.g. stiffness, permeability, porosity) is critical for successful repair.
