This intensive course provides a theoretical framework for translators and researchers in the area of AVT as well as hands-on training with professional software and audiovisual material taken from different authentic contexts.

Module A: Subtitling (29 June - 7 July) – 12 hours – English into French, Italian, Spanish, Polish

Module B: Dubbing and Voiceover (8 - 16 July) – 12 hours – English into French, Italian, Spanish, Polish

Module C: Accessibility to the Media (17 - 24 July) – 12 hours – English only

Transnationalizing Modern Languages

Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures

The ‘Transnationalizing Modern Languages’ project investigates cultural exchange within communities and individuals across time and space. We explore a series of critical instances of linguistic and cultural translation with a specific focus on modern Italy and the experiences of mobility that are embedded in its recent history.
We use the Italian case as a template from which to develop a renewed model for the work of Modern Language studies and its applications in the 21st century. More broadly, our research offers insights into how people respond to living in a bilingual or multilingual environment.
The project is one of three large grants in the AHRC’s ‘Translating Cultures’ theme.

 

International Literary Translation and Creative Writing Summer School

British Centre for Literary Translation, UEA, Norwich

The 2015 BCLT summer school will take place at the University of East Anglia and at Dragon Hall, flagship building for Norwich UNESCO City of Literature. Run by the British Centre for Literary Translation in partnership with Writers’ Centre Norwich, the summer school brings together writers and translators for an intensive, one-week, residential programme of hands-on translation and creative writing practice.
 
Thanks to the generous support of the Goethe-Institut London, German is one of the languages on offer this year: through the week Katy Derbyshire will be leading a German>English Translation Workshop with writer Kristof Magnusson.  Other languages available include Dutch, Italian, Korean and Norwegian.  We will be running a further two multilingual workshops, one for poetry and one for prose, designed for translators working from any language into English.
 
There will also be a series of creative writing workshops for translators, given by Sarah Bower, Sharlene Teo, Cecilia Rossi, Henrietta Rose-Innes and Eliza Robertson.

Translate in the City Short Courses
Translate in the City is the first literary translation summer school to be held at City University London. It offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for individual attention, and places will be allocated on a strictly "first come, first served" basis.
The course will be taught in an all-day workshop environment using a variety of texts including non-fiction (essays, journalism, academic) and fiction (poetry, fantasy, children's literature and crime writing etc.) There will be plenty of opportunities for networking with publishers, agents, university staff and one another. Daily evening events will be scheduled including a keynote lecture, talks given by experts in the literary translation field, social networking event etc.
For the second year, City is proud to collaborate with And Other Stories on a translation competition organised during the Translate in the City Summer School. Students will be offered the opportunity to translate a sample from a novel with a chance to have their winning sample taken further and to publish their first translation with the publishing house. The competition is open to most languages.

Bookings are now open.
The cost of £480 includes all tuition on the course and light refreshments twice a day, as well as a sandwich lunch. Accommodation is however not included, please refer to the Accommodation page for details of suitable reasonably priced accommodation near the University.
10 bursaries of £100 each are offered to applicants across all languages. These will be awarded at the sole discretion of the SS15 directors. Please write to loic.pupile@city.ac.uk explaining the circumstances you believe make it imperative for you to receive a bursary towards your course fees. The deadline for bursary applications is 31st May.
This year, BooksinItaly will sponsor an extra 5 bursaries of £100 for participants working from Italian. For more information, click here.

As the workshops are all into English, it is essential that all applicants to the course are English native speaker level.
