This module discusses the international legal structure for transnational cooperation between criminal justice agencies. This includes responses to particular transnational crimes such as trafficking in migrants drug smuggling and illicit arms distribution. It looks at the responses to these crimes such as transnational criminal courts, mutual legal assistance and extradition. Finally, it critically analyses the transnational criminal justice system.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Describe the system of transnational criminal law and develop an understanding of the system;
- identify and critically analyse the substantive and procedural laws involved;
- identify the principal institutions working in this system;
- critique the political and social context in which these forms of cooperation take place;
- apply this knowledge to the Irish context; and
- apply this knowledge to novel crimes and procedures.
