Are you ready to go overseas and discover a new life for yourself? As a first step in applying to go on a mobility, it's important to think about what it involves – going to new places, seeing a new university and discovering new styles of learning.
While deciding, you need to think about how you plan to cover the cost involved in going away. You must also consider the academic planning involved in meeting your course requirements while studying overseas.
All students must dedicate the necessary time and attention in advance to plan their mobility. Students must only participate in Trinity approved programmes. Please consult Trinity Global with any questions.
Information Sessions and Advising
Attend our Go Global Information Session to learn more about the upcoming mobility application cycle, different types of mobility, application instructions and requirements, funding, and more! Register here to attend the Go Global Information Session (link opening in September 2025)
Schools/Departments at Trinity host their own information sessions. They are typically held between September - December. Please contact your School/Department.
Advising will take place daily between mid October - mid November every year. Drop in to chat with a Trinity Global member of staff or a Global Mobility Ambassador who previously undertook a mobility.

Application
2:1 is the recommended minimum requirement for students going on mobility, this may be lower or higher depending on your School, as you will also need to meet your School requirements.
Placement depends on your grades, demand and the number of places we have at a university in a given year. We aim to place as many students as possible. However, please note our exchange programme is competitive and not all students will receive an offer. Note, if you receive an offer from Trinity, you still need to apply to and be accepted by your host university. If you are rejected from your host university we will not be able to place you elsewhere.
For College-Wide Exchange, there is one deadline for all applicants. Please refer to the application form to confirm the deadline. The link to the application will be posted on the website once it goes live in October 2025. For Erasmus, application deadlines can vary based on your programme and will be confirmed to you directly by the relevant Trinity Academic Mobility Coordinator in your programme of study.
If you have accepted a conditional offer for a mobility and have decided to withdraw your acceptance, you must notify both your Trinity Academic Mobility Coordinator and Trinity Global (global.mobility@tcd.ie) as soon as possible.
If you have already departed for your mobility and decide to withdraw, you must withdraw and return to Trinity before the start of the fourth week of teaching at Trinity. Please note, you may be liable for host university fees even if you withdraw early.
Pre-Departure
Trinity Global hosts pre-departure sessions twice a year to provide you information, guidance and resources to help you prepare for your mobility. Students who have accepted an offer to attend a mobility will receive an invitation to attend the required pre-departure sessions prior to their departure.
Remember, if you are travelling outside of Europe you will most likely require a visa. You should receive all relevant visa information from the host university and if you have any questions about your visa requirements please contact the incoming student support team at your host university. Visa processing times are outside of the control of Trinity so please ensure you apply as soon as possible.
Cost of living depends on the country you are going to as well as the location with the host country.
Do your research about the location of your host university and prepare and budget accordingly, especially considering: accommodation costs, food, books, local transport, food, and social and travel plans.
Not all our partner universities provide guaranteed accommodation for students. It is the student's responsibility to secure accommodation for the duration of their mobility. Your host university may provide resources for on and off campus accommodation options. Students must apply by the accommodation deadlines. Please consider you accommodation options carefully before making any non-refundable deposits.
Students participating in an Erasmus mobility are to apply for the Erasmus+ Grant. This grant is intended as a contribution to help with your travel and living costs and varies based on the cost of living in different countries.
The Erasmus+ Grant is paid in two installments. The first payment (approximately 80% of your estimated grant amount) is issued after your arrival to your host university. The final payment is issued after you have returned home. To receive the Erasmus+ Grant, you must submit all required documents. The Trinity Global Mobility team will provide you with the necessary information and documents before your departure.
Students participating in a non-EU exchange may be eligible to apply for the Global Mobility Bursary. The bursary is not guaranteed and students with high financial need or disability costs are prioritised. The Bursary is allocated by Trinity and outbound exchange students will be contacted by Trinity Global once the applications open for the Global Mobility Bursary each semester. Please note, if awarded the bursary the funding is not provided until after you have confirmed arrival at your host university.
You must have adequate health insurance if you will be participating in a mobility. If you are travelling outside of Europe this is important as it may be part of your visa application process. If you are travelling within Europe you must have insurance for the Erasmus+ Grant. Check your host university's website to see if they have any information, recommendations or requirements.
In most cases you will have to pre-register for modules with your host university due to demand. Work with your Academic Mobility Coordinator(s) to select your modules and choose a few backups in case your top choices are unavailable. Confirm any academic pre-requisites and restrictions that may apply to your degree.
Before you leave, you will need to complete your Learning Agreement. The Learning Agreement lays out the modules you will take while you are on exchange. The Learning Agreement will be worked on in consultation with your Academic Mobility Coordinator(s) and signed off and approved by them as well as your host university.
Your experience and understanding of going on a mobility is hugely valuable to other students. Sign up to be a student blogger and write a testimonial about your experience! We are always looking for student ambassadors to speak about their time abroad, whether at an information session or via email to prospective students.
