Athena SWAN and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

The School of English continues to work with Athena SWAN to advance gender equality along with diversity, equality, and inclusion more broadly within the School. The School of English currently holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award and is working toward a Bronze Award renewal.

The Athena SWAN (Scientific Women’s Academic Network) Charter is the internationally recognised quality mark for gender equality in universities/colleges. The School of English’s commitment to Athena Swan and EDI aligns with Trinity’s Strategic Plan 2025-2030. More information on Athena SWAN and TCD can be found here.

The School of English has an established tradition of teaching and researching in the areas of genders and sexualities and of engaging with and promoting equality and diversity across our curriculum. Undergraduate and postgraduate students have access to a wide range of modules that deal with a variety of material from across the centuries. Module design, module delivery, and class discussions are informed by principles of gender equality as well as diversity, inclusion, and equality more broadly.

Through our research, many members of the School explore the complexities of genders and sexualities. The School’s many outreach and public engagement activities also directly address diversity, inclusion, and gender equality. For example, the exhibition Story Spinners: Irish Women and Children’s Books, co-curated by Dr Pádraic Whyte and Dr Jane Carroll –along with postgraduate students – explores the contribution of women to the development of Irish children’s literature.
