Admission Requirements & How to Apply
Thinking of applying to the MSc in Economics at Trinity? Below you’ll find all the information you need about entry requirements, the application process, and required documentation.
Admission Requirements
Applicants should normally hold a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) with a significant quantitative component. We welcome applications from candidates with the following backgrounds:
- Single or joint honours degrees in Economics.
- Social science and business degrees with substantial final-year economics content.
- Degrees in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.
Candidates without a formal background in economics must demonstrate mathematical ability - this can include relevant coursework, standardised test results, or references.
All applicants must meet:
- Trinity College Dublin’s general postgraduate entry requirements.
- International applicant entry requirements, where relevant.
- Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must fulfil the College Postgraduate English language requirements
Application Procedure
All applications must be submitted through the online application portal. Supporting documents should be provided in English, or accompanied by an official English translation.
You will need to upload:
- Official academic transcripts
(If your degree is in progress, an unofficial transcript may be submitted initially. Final transcripts are required for an unconditional offer.) - Copy of degree certificate(s)
- Two letters of recommendation
(Referees will receive an automatic email request once your application is submitted.) - Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Motivation letter/personal statement
(A single page is sufficient.) - Valid English language test results, if applicable

Deadline for submission: 31 July 2025
Late applications may be considered from strong candidates, subject to space availability.
What Happens Next?
Once your application is complete:
- The Department of Economics will assess your application.
- A recommendation will be sent to Trinity’s Academic Registry.
- You will receive an update via the application portal.
- If offered a place, you’ll have three weeks to accept and pay a deposit.
