About the Institute

The Institute for International Integration Studies (IIIS) was launched in June 2001. In addition to generous private funding, it received a significant grant under the Irish Government's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) scheme. Since Autumn 2002, it has been housed in the Sutherland Centre, part of a new penthouse floor in the Arts Building on the main TCD campus at College Green.

The goal of the IIIS is to conduct rigorous academic research on the global and regional dimensions of international economic, political and cultural integration. By developing new theoretical and empirical perspectives, it seeks to improve understanding about the many dimensions of the integration process.

Research in this area is vital for the informed policy making at nationall and supra-national levels and for the promotion of an informed popular debate on the pros and cons of the international integration process.

In addition to supporting basic research that furthers the state of knowledge on international integration, the IIIS also seeks to disseminate widely its research findings in policymaking, business and general media circles.

The current academic research of the IIIS is centred on eleven themes:

  • The World Economy
  • Globalization and the Nation State
  • International Regulation
  • Public Policies and Multi-Level Regulatory Structures in a Global Economy
  • International Financial Integration (INFINITI)
  • Interreligious Ethics Religions in the Cultural Dynamics of Globalisation
  • Global Networks
  • Globalisation and Party Competition
  • Business as a Conduit for Globalization
  • Evaluating the Impact of Globalization on Productivity Dynamics and Labour Market Outcomes
  • Historical Antecedents of Contemporary Globalization
