About the Institute for International Integration Studies
The IIIS was established in 2001 with a grant from the Irish government’s Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI) and a philantrophic donation from Peter Sutherland. It is dedicated to promoting and disseminating research and learning about the myriad dimensions of global and regional integration. The public debate on the merits and demerits of global and European integration has been extremely vigorous in recent years. Academic research can make an important contribution to this debate by helping to better understand the underlying processes driving international integration as well as providing evidence regarding its actual impact. The IIIS seeks to become a leading international centre that will make a significant contribution to national, European and global research efforts on these challenging issues.
In pursuit of this goal the IIIS brings together a network of Internal & External Research Associates who are linked to its programmes of research. It also provides facilities for a significant number of postgraduate research students writing dissertations in relevant areas associated with these programmes. Achieving a broad understanding of the implications of international integration for economic and social development plus the challenges it poses for decision makers in the public and private sectors requires a multidisciplinary approach. The IIIS brings together researchers and postgraduate students from a large number of academic departments. These include business, economics, history, law, political science, sociology and religion. The Institute is housed in the Sutherland Centre which is centrally located on the Trinity campus in the heart of Dublin.
IIIS research reflects the research interests and activities of its Research Associates and is currently focused on the following flagship areas::
- The Development Challenge
- International Macro-Economics and Political & Economic Integration in Europe
Other research areas include:
- Climate Justice
- Globalised Ireland
- Post-conflict Justice
IIIS research is disseminated through its Discussion Paper series as well as through the scholarly articles and publications of its Research Associates. There are regular seminar series and public lectures as well as occasional workshops and conferences, details of which are given on our Upcoming Events page. In addition, the IIIS runs a Visitors Programme under which we provide space and facilities to external researchers who can contribute to the IIIS research themes.
