The Value of the Irish Pub: Invention and Reinvention

Date: 19 May - 19 May 2026
Time: 18:00 - 20:00
Venue: Neill Lecture Theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub

Book Launch of The Irish Pub: Invention and Reinvention organised by the School of English.

If you would like to attend please rsvp to corkuniversitypress@ucc.ie.

This event marks the recent publication of a ground-breaking volume on the Irish pub from Cork University Press.

Join Dr Moonyoung Hong and Dr Perry Share, editors of The Irish Pub: Invention and reinvention for an evening of discussion and debate about the pub, featuring talks by contributors to the book, live music and visuals, and a discussion of the value of pub. How are we valuing the pub? Should we value the pub?

The book will be launched by Prof. Chris Morash, the Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing, followed by a panel discussion focusing on the past, present and future of the Irish pub from a multidisciplinary angle. The pub has long been a central feature of Irish communities – in Ireland and elsewhere. While its decline has been foretold many times across the decades, it continues to thrive: not only as a centre for community, but as a place for personal identity, tourism, entertainment and cultural expression.

Discounted copies of the beautifully produced volume will be on sale and light refreshments will be provided.

This event is run in accordance with Trinity’s Dignity and Respect policy, and its commitment to nurturing a respectful and inclusive research culture.
