Professor Catherine Hayes
Prof In / Specialist in Public Health, Public Health & Primary Care
Biography
Professor Catherine Hayes is a Professor in Public Health in the joint Discipline of Public Health and Primary Care in the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a joint academic-service post as a Specialist in Public Health Medicine with the HSE working on Health Information Systems. She obtained her undergraduate medical degree from University College Cork and completed the Cork Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice. She undertook a Masters in Public Health at University College Dublin (UCD). Having completed Higher Specialist Training in Public Health Medicine, she was a full-time public health specialist with the health service during which completed her Doctorate at the School of Medicine in UCD.
She was a recipient of prestigious Training in Dissemination and Implementation Research (TIDIRH) training award at the National Cancer Institute, US in 2016. In 2017 she was one of three recipients nationally of the HRB Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Awards. In this project she led an international research team to pilot a community-based smoking cessation intervention We Can Quit (WCQ) for socio-economically disadvantaged women, delivered by trained local women. WCQ is now embedded in HSE stop smoking services in the new Slaintecare Healthy Communities and which provides a model for action in Europe. Within Trinity, she is the Academic Lead for the Healthy Trinity Tobacco Free Programme. She is a national public health expert for the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and a member of the recently formed national Growing Up in Ireland Research and Practice Expert Advisory Group.
Catherine is a Trainer and Examiner for the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI), a former Board Member and Vice-Dean, and received Fellowship from the RCPI in 2020. She was awarded Fellowship from Trinity College in 2021. She has almost 140 publications and is an Associate Editor of Pilot and Feasibility Studies, and Trials journals. She mentors for the TCD Aurora, Women in Leadership, programme. She is a member of the National Research Ethics Committee. She is the current President of the UK and Ireland Society for Social Medicine and Population Health, (the leading society for academic public health research in UK and Ireland), a former External Liaison Officer, and a Senior Mentor for the Society. She is a current member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the European Public Health Association.

Research Expertise
Description
Her research addresses the development, implementation, and evaluation of targeted interventions to address in particular tobacco and obesity-related determinants of cancer and other chronic diseases across the life course. She has a particular focus on maternal and child health. She is a recognised international expert in dissemination and implementation science research, and in the translation of research into policy and practice. She is an experienced population health trialist. Through her joint post she has developed direct links to policy and practice and has used her leadership and skillset to advance national policy implementation, health and health service improvement, and as a public health advocate.Projects

- We Can Quit 2 (WCQ2): A pilot cluster randomized trial of a peer-led community-based smoking cessation intervention for disadvantaged women in Ireland
- Summary
- The recently published We Can Quit2 (WCQ2) pilot study was a pragmatic two-arm parallel-group cluster randomized controlled pilot trial of a peer-delivered community-based smoking cessation intervention (We Can Quit (WCQ) in disadvantaged Irish women. This pilot trial showed that a stop-smoking intervention tailored to a group of women smokers living in SED areas which was delivered by trained local women within their local communities was feasible. Furthermore, although not formally compared, more WCQ women were abstinent from smoking at the end of treatment. The results are relevant to enhance the design of a fully powered effectiveness trial, and provide important evidence on the barriers to deliver a tailored smoking cessation service to SED women smokers in Ireland.

- Implementation of Making Every Contact Count (MECC): developing a collaborative strategy to optimise and scale-up MECC
- Summary
- Many chronic illnesses can be prevented if people adopt healthier behaviours. Behavioural change through "Make Every Contact (by a Health Professional) Count (MECC)" is an evidence-based approach to decreasing cancer and other chronic diseases. The Making Every Contact Count (MECC) programme, in the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE), aims to train all healthcare professionals to support patients to make healthier lifestyle choices during routine healthcare contacts. In this multidisciplinary project, the HSE MECC Team and academic researchers work together to create a strategy to optimise expertise and scale-up the implementation of MECC more widely to maximise the chances of programme success.

- Designing, evaluating and implementing a pilot complex intervention in childhood obesity
- Summary
- This was an interdisciplinary collaboration involving researchers, policymakers and practitioners from University College Cork, National University of Ireland Galway, Trinity College Dublin and Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre. Its purpose was to develop future leaders in population health and health services research specifically in Health Economics, Implementation Science and Behavioural Science. The ICE Fellows worked together to design, implement and evaluate a pilot complex intervention to promote optimal infant feeding practices in primary care.

- SCOPE (Standardised measurement for Childhood Obesity Prevention)
- Summary
- This project aims to develop a standardised outcome measurement set (SOMS) including reliable, valid, and appropriate measures of core infant-feeding outcomes that can be implemented in research and practice. Developing a SOMS is timely and critical to enhance synthesis and evaluation of childhood obesity prevention interventions and strategies. This project will develop a stakeholder-informed standardised outcome measurement set for core infant-feeding outcomes to prevent childhood obesity. The measurement set will provide an immediately actionable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to reduce waste and optimise evaluation of childhood obesity prevention interventions and strategies.
