Dr. Alina Paula Cosma
Assistant Professor, Psychology
Biography
Alina Cosma is a researcher with extensive experience in the design and management of cross-sectional health surveys focusing on child and adolescent health and well-being. Alina was awarded a PhD in Psychology in 2015 from Babes Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca, Romania. She has held post-doctoral positions at prestigious universities in the UK (University of St Andrews), Ireland (RCSI, Trinity College Dublin), the Netherlands (Utrecht University), and Czechia (Palacky University Olomouc).
Alina's research follows four main streams all aimed at better understanding current risk and protective factors in the global health and well-being of young people: i) time trends and predictors of change over time in adolescent health and mental health (within-country and cross-country perspectives); ii) social (e.g., gender, SES) and structural determinants (e.g., gender inequality) of adolescent health and well-being; iii) health and well-being in vulnerable populations (i.e., sexual minorities and adolescents with an immigration background); and iv) climate change, sustainability, and (mental) health.
From 2011 onwards, Alina has been part of the cross-national survey Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) network where she is currently chairing the Early Careers Group and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Focus group. In addition, Alina has been collaborating with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and has published several WHO reports and policy briefs focused on child and adolescent health in the European Region. She currently holds positions in the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH; Education Officer) and European Association for Developmental Psychology (EADP - Early Career Representative for Ireland).

- Summary
- There is no health without mental health, and the foundation of the latter is largely laid in adolescence. Recent evidence indicates that today's adolescents (i.e. Generation Z) experience worse mental health than the preceding generation (i.e. the Millennials). The EU-funded GenerationZ project aims to examine individual changes in adolescent mental health, and assess cross-national variation and trends in population-level adolescent mental health across 40+ European countries. The project's work is in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the European regional and national health strategies.
