Best Urban Freight Solutions

Dublin at Night

  • Project Team:
    • Project Leader: Prof. Margaret O’Mahony
    • Research Student: Clare Finnegan
  • Description:
    • This project will determine whether a logistics regime and configuration can be found that can offer a more sustainable solution for goods deliveries in a city centre. Solutions will involve the use of a combination of urban delivery centres, more night deliveries and of a dedicated fleet of advanced “silent vehicles” (electric and hybrid light vans and gas-fuelled heavier vehicles) for niche applications.

The project aims to establish whether delivery and collection traffic can be managed in a way that is more environmentally and socially friendly, while being acceptable to businesses and economically justifiable. The project is linked to an EC sponsored network (Best Urban Freight Solutions) of cities that are developing and successfully demonstrating different tailor-made approaches to sustainable transport.

The project will include an examination of the regulatory and other management incentives that may be needed to promote acceptance of more sustainable traffic solutions in Dublin city centre.
