Biography

I am a palaeoecologist working on long-term environmental change in Norway and Ireland. In both countries I have worked on research projects relating to the reconstruction of past human impact and vegetation dynamics, closely interlinked with archaeological survey and excavation. My PhD involved detailed palaeoecological investigations on peats, mineral soils and lake sediments at Barrees, Beara peninsula, Co. Cork, Ireland, in the context of the archaeological project ‘Marginal Landscapes: Upland Settlement in Late Prehistoric Ireland’. Pollen analysis was the main investigative tool, complemented by 14C dating, macrofossil and fossil wood analyses, and physical measurements including magnetic susceptibility and loss-on-ignition. This work, in particular, provided an environmental context for the Bronze Age to medieval period upland local farming activity in Barrees, through reconstruction of landscape patterns, woodland dynamics, peat initiation and blanket bog development. I have also recently worked as a palaeoecologist on the excavation of ‘The Mill at Kilbegly’, along the N6 Ballinasloe to Athlone National Road Scheme, where my palaeobotanical work provided an environmental context for the medieval horizontal mill and its operation. In Norway I have been investigating the use of clearance cairns in the Iron Age and Medieval period through the project 'Management of arable remnants in outfields', funded by the Research Council of Norway. I am currently based in the Museum of Archaeology, University of Stavanger, Norway.
