University of Sanctuary Undergraduate Scholarships
Trinity College Dublin University of Sanctuary Undergraduate Scholarships are available to students in the Irish International Protection system, who have completed the Leaving Certificate or a further education qualification (QQI / NGQ level 5 or 6) and are offered a place on an undergraduate course in Trinity through the CAO.
These scholarships cover:
- Academic fees for duration of undergraduate degree
- Annual stipend (aligned with the SUSI grant to help support living costs)
- A laptop
- On-campus food allowance
The scholarships are open to people in the international protection system, including refugees, asylum seekers and people with leave to remain who are seeking international protection in Ireland and who wish to undertake their undergraduate studies at Trinity.
Please note that beneficiaries of temporary protection in receipt of state fee supports are not currently eligible for the scholarship.
Application Process
Applications are now open for the 2025 Trinity College Dublin University of Sanctuary Undergraduate Scholarship.
Before you apply:
- Make sure that you first apply to your desired Trinity course via the CAO at cao.ie.
- Have your CAO number ready for the scholarship application form.
- Have evidence of your residency status ready to upload to the application form (e.g. photo of IRP card, scan of letter from the Department of Justice).

Scholarship Eligibility
- Applicants must have been offered a place on an undergraduate course in Trinity through the CAO.
- Applicants must have completed the Leaving Certificate examination and/or a QQI / NFQ level 5/6 full award within the last two years.
- Applicants must not be eligible for the Free Fees Initiative.
- Applicants must be able to commence studies in the year of application.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are entering a third-level undergraduate programme for the first time.
- Some courses in Trinity have mandatory periods of study abroad. Applications for courses such as these will be considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the relevant School/Course.
PhD Scholarships: 'Refugee-Thrive' Project
Trinity Centre for Forced Migration Studies announces Interdisciplinary PhD Opportunities
The Trinity Centre for Forced Migration Studies has secured funding for four PhD scholarships through the 2025-26 Trinity Research Doctorate Award Group Based Projects scheme. The scholarships support the innovative 'Refugee-Thrive: Building trauma-informed refugee resilience to strengthen inclusive societies' project.
Dr. Rachel Hoare, Director of the Trinity Centre for Forced Migration Studies, leads this interdisciplinary initiative with colleagues from multiple schools: English; Law; Linguistics, Speech and Communication Studies; Medicine; Nursing and Midwifery; Religion, Theology and Peace Studies; and Social Sciences and Philosophy.

The Trinity Centre for Forced Migration Studies was established by Dr. Rachel Hoare (School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies) to foster interdisciplinary research and develop teaching and training in relation to forced migration. The Centre creates a collaborative community of researchers, practitioners, and experts by experience to seek funding opportunities, develop educational programs, disseminate research findings, and promote networking initiatives.
