Research
The Department has internationally competitive research strengths in macroeconomics, international development, cultural economics, economic history, energy economics and applied microeconomics. The Department has been successful in attracting financial support from the European Commission, Irish Research Council, Irish Aid, Science Foundation Ireland, PRTLI, the EU Framework Programme, NORFACE, the World Bank, Fondation Banque de France and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) among others.
The international development area also has critical mass with staff members Andrea Guariso, Michael King, Martina Kirchberger, Nicola Mastrorocco, Tara Mitchell, Gaia Narciso, Carol Newman and Alejandra Ramos. Their research centre, the Trinity Impact Evaluation Unit (TIME), brings together researchers in economics, development practitioners, and policy makers in a collective effort to estimate the impact and understand the underlying mechanisms of development projects, aid and investments.
The macroeconomics group includes Agustin Benetrix, Davide Romelli, Paul Scanlon and Michael Wycherley as well as Patrick Honohan and Philip Lane. This group is centred around the International Macro-TCD (IM-TCD) research unit, that aims to provide high-quality research in the field of international macroeconomics and finance. Eleanor Denny is highly active in the field of energy economics, while Martina Kirchberger and Ronan Lyons are very active in the area of urban economics. Ronan Lyons and Marvin Suesse are both prominent in the field of economic history. Francis O'Toole is active in various fields of applied microeconomics (competition economics, applied theory).
