Dr Seegers will be delivering the new module SOU33144: Comparative Sociology 2 this upcoming semester

Dr Seegers is a quantitative sociologist working at the intersection of education, work, and social inequalities. A central theme of his work is whether adult education functions as a mechanism of social mobility or instead reinforces existing inequalities. In this context, he critically examines political narratives that frame adult education as a second chance and a corrective to earlier educational disadvantages, asking whether these promises are fulfilled or whether adult education disproportionately benefits those who are already privileged.

His research is partly driven by his own experiences: as a first-generation student who grew up in a family of miners, he is deeply committed to overcoming barriers to education and views widening access not only as a matter of fairness but also as essential for strengthening social participation and equal opportunities in society.

He previously studied at the German universities of Bremen and Osnabrück, as well as Mittuniversitet in Sweden. Before coming to TCD, he worked at the University of Osnabrück and the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training.

We are delighted to welcome him to our faculty and certain that he will make a huge contribution to our continued delivery of excellence in research, teaching and wider University activities.
