Biography
Joonghyun Kwak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. He received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Connecticut in 2018 and subsequently held postdoctoral positions at The Ohio State University (2018-2020), the University of Essex (2020-2022), and the University of Oxford (2022-2025). His research focuses on globalisation and its relationship to social and educational inequality as well as sustainable development. His current projects examine (1) how international migration shapes intergenerational social mobility, (2) how meritocratic culture fostered by global competition and educational expansion relates to the rise of populism, and (3) how international student mobility contributes to sustainable development, including poverty reduction, democratic promotion, and environmental well-being. His work has been published in journals such as International Journal of Comparative Sociology, American Behavioral Scientist, International Journal of Educational Research, and World Development. He also serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Sociology of Education.
