Research Interests

I completed my MSc in Clinical Laboratory Science in 2013 and am currently enrolled as a PhD student in DIT. My work with the BIOMARKAPD project centres on the establishment and validation of 3 hugely promising biomarkers for aiding in the clinical diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease, with particular attention to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The development of a clinically validated laboratory test for neurodegenerative conditions is an important step for the staging and treatment of these conditions which are becoming more prevalent in Ireland today. Much of the present treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are at their most effective in the earliest stages of the disease. The development of these CSF biomarkers (hTau/pTau/Aβ42) will allow for prompt treatment and a better quality of life for sufferers of these devastating conditions.
