Former Prime Minister of Italy, and former President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, visits Trinity

Linda and President Prodi during the 'World Upside Down and the Role of Europe event in Tangent.

Linda welcomed President Romano Prodi to Trinity this week. Romano Prodi served two terms as Prime Minister of Italy (1996-1998, and 2006-2008) and also served as President of the European Commission (1999-2004) and was in Trinity to share his thoughts on “The world upside down and the role of Europe”.

During his talk in Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, he contrasted the current global situation with his own time in office. During his presidency of the European Commission, the euro was successfully introduced, the Union was enlarged to 10 new countries from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and the treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe was signed.

Questions from the audience ranged from climate change to migration to the war on Ukraine.

Overall, President Prodi’s visit was both insightful and engaging, and he was delighted to have the opportunity to engage with Trinity students and staff.
