For eight decades, Europe's security rested on a transatlantic bargain. That assumption no longer holds.
The war in Ukraine grinds on. The second Trump administration has cast serious doubt over US commitments that have underpinned European defence since 1949. And European countries are being asked to make choices about their own security that they haven't had to face in living memory, about alliances, deterrence, and what European defence actually means without US backing. Join political scientists Dr Jesse Dillon Savage and Dr Thomas Chadefaux as they explore where things are likely to head in the short to medium term, and what it all means for a small, militarily non-aligned state like Ireland.
About the Speakers
Dr Jesse Dillon Savage
Jesse Dillon Savage is Associate Professor in Political Science at Trinity College Dublin and a Fellow of Trinity College. His research focuses on international relations, conflict and civil-military relations.
Dr Thomas Chadefaux
Thomas Chadefaux is Professor of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on the causes of interstate conflict and how to predict them, drawing on large-scale data sources including newspapers, satellite images and financial markets to identify early warning signals for war. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and has held positions at the University of Rochester and ETH Zurich.
