Description

My research has moved through various stages : 1. Vibration absorbers Post PhD (1985-1987) : Previous publications showed that improvements to the classic den-hartog device could be achieved by introducing non-linearity however the balance between system damping and non-linearity or the range of response types was never rigorously explored. The summary findings were that higher performance can be achieved but as this requires light damping, the risk of disruptive non-harmonic responses emerge. 2. Identification of non-linear systems : Here the extension of the identification of general linear input/output systems using spectral methods was proposed in a pragmatic way for the first time. The initial paper was published in 1988 in the flegling journal (Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing) with subsequent follow ups. A most spectacular work included the experimental application of the method to developing a model for squeeze film damping from a fretting wear problem associated with heat exchanger tubes at CEA Saclay (Esmonde et al 1990) and an experimental application to locate a discrete non-linearity (Xu and Rice 1996). These analysis methods allowed me to engage with various aeroacoustic problems with some excellent results on the non-linear dynamics of light fibrous materials (eg Rice Torrance Eikelman 1998 and with Goransson 1999) which is now being revisted in the context of metamaterials. 3. Vibration to Acoustics : As the bulk of my funding was now linked to aeronautic applications, I became more interested in designing solutions for real/large systems. Such included both acoustic and vibe/acoustic systems. Experimental testing of larger systems had been well established at this time but the computational challenges associated with large scale acoustic systems now became key in design. I also examined during this period the classical Finite Element Method and published on Middle Ear dynamics with e.g. (Blaney from 1996, and Ferris 1998 - prosthesis designs) In these paper series we developed for the first time coupled vibroacoustic models for the outer and middle ear entities. I also branched into wave based full field methods and boundary methods with e.g. Lopez et al from 2003. Efficient Iterative solutions for helmholtz type problems in acoustics are still elusive. 4. Environmental Noise : In 2003 the European Noise Directive was launched and I obtained considerable funding by branching into noise impact and the consequences of the END in particular with publications from 2006 onwards with Murphy and King. Dissemination for Acoustics is a key and I have had the opportunity with support from SFI Metropolis to develop in conjunction with C O'Sullivan and F.Newells and F.Bolands groups ground breaking auralised city (college) animations with traffic and people (pubs from 2009). 5.Jet Noise : These fluid flow processes are extremely complex and much effort has been made by the community to model this. My general approach has been to use semi-analytic approaches driven by underlying rans methods with some success publications from (2007) with a view to justifying design changes. An interesting development in this area is wind turbine (particularly intermittent) noise and in general rotor noise (see Botha 2017). 6.Metamaterial Acoustics : This is a major opportunity which I have engaged in where absorbent materials may now be manufactured with precise internal geometries at scales suitable for "designer" acoustic interaction in the audible range. Our combination of manufacturing, experimental and modelling analysis was duly recognised by a H2020 grant (Aerialist - J.Kennedy PI) and our first two conference publications have already been invited for journal submission. This development is particularly satisfying as it draws on all of the 5 previous expertise areas with the addition of expertise from AMBER and our additive manufacturing group
