Dr Lara Flanagan

Research Fellow

Biography

Dr. Lara Flanagan is a Research Fellow in the Fluids, Acoustics and Vibration group at Trinity College Dublin, currently working on underwater acoustics. She is part of the SeaScan project, which transforms undersea fibre optic cables into large-scale acoustic sensor networks to detect “dark vessels.”

Her research interests include aeroacoustics, fluid-structure interaction, wave propagation in complex media, and acoustic metamaterials. She has developed efficient numerical and reduced-order models for absorptive structures and conducted experimental work using impedance eduction and PIV for boundary layer characterisation.

She was previously involved in an ADAPT–IMAX collaboration, focusing on improving loudspeaker performance behind LED cinema screens. Earlier, she worked at LAUM (CNRS-UMR 6613) with Safran Aircraft Engines on acoustic liner design for core engine noise reduction as part of the CIRRUS Clean Sky 2 programme. She received her Ph.D. from Trinity College Dublin in 2021 under the Horizon 2020 AERIALIST project.

Dr Marco Aurélio de Oliveira

Research Fellow

Biography

Dr Marco Oliveira is a Research Fellow in the Acoustics and Vibrations Group at Trinity College Dublin, where he conducts research on the noise impact of drones and electric aircraft, funded by the Head-Genuit Foundation.

With a PhD in Building Technology, he developed innovative façade solutions that integrate sound insulation and ventilation - a key challenge in sustainable architecture. He also holds a postdoc in Building Acoustics.

Before joining academia, Marco ran a successful architectural acoustics consultancy in Brazil for 20 years, working on projects for some of the country’s largest construction firms. His expertise spans practical industry applications and cutting-edge research, bridging the gap between acoustic design and emerging technologies like urban air mobility.
