The IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control Delivered at Trinity College Dublin

The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) is the UK’s leading professional body for those working in acoustics, noise, and vibration. Established in 1974, the IOA is a nominated body of the Engineering Council and offers registration at both Chartered and Incorporated Engineer levels. The IOA has over 3000 member whose expertise spans a wide range of areas, including architectural acoustics, building acoustics, electroacoustics, environmental noise, engineering dynamics, speech and hearing, underwater acoustics, and more.

Since 1975, the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control has been the benchmark qualification for acoustics professionals in the UK and Ireland. It is widely recognised as the primary route for those seeking a career as an acoustic consultant.

Delivered at Trinity College Dublin

At Trinity’s School of Engineering, the IOA Diploma has been offered annually since 2013 under the coordination of Professor John Kennedy. The programme is delivered through the Fluids, Acoustics and Vibrations Research Group, a globally recognised centre for acoustics research. This collaboration has strengthened links with industry and Ireland’s acoustics consultancy community, providing students with real-world relevance and opportunities.

A Global Learning Environment

Trinity is one of only three recognised centres offering the laboratory component of the Diploma. Each year, students from Ireland, the UK, Europe, and beyond come together for an intensive, hands-on experience. With diverse personal and professional backgrounds, participants benefit from peer learning and a global perspective.

Laboratory Training

Students take part in eight laboratory sessions over four consecutive days, using advanced equipment to develop essential practical skills required for a successful career in acoustics.

Course Structure

To achieve the Diploma, students must complete:

Three Core Modules:

  • General Principles of Acoustics
  • Laboratory
  • Project

Plus Two Specialist Modules (chosen from):

  • Building Acoustics
  • Environmental Noise
  • Noise and Vibration Control Engineering
  • Regulation & Assessment of Noise

Examinations:
