Biography

Sarah Curristan has a background in psychology and cognitive science. She has previously been involved in several research projects in the area of European security under the FP7 and Horizon 2020 European funding frameworks. These projects include: an examination of online mobile communications and social media solutions for crisis and emergency management (iSAR+, SOTERIA); the creation of new technology solutions for intelligence sharing and the mitigation of the threat posed by homemade explosives (HOMER); and the delivery of game-based training for soft skills aimed at personnel deployed to international peacekeeping missions (GAP). Her role within these projects was to carry out organizational fieldwork, requirements gathering, HCI analysis, and perform broader system evaluation for the effectiveness and acceptability of new technologies for security.

Currently, Sarah is working on the PRILA project funded by the European Research Council. This project seeks to examine how accountability is upheld in the prison context, and the lived experience of these mechanisms in practice. In particular, her research will focus on the experiences of governors, senior management, and senior administration. This research will be conducted with a view to understanding how accountability mechanisms are regarded and understood by staff, how they affect the perceived legitimacy of the organization, and how they could be best instantiated to support prison work. This work will involve an in-depth mixed-methods study of the Irish system which will then serve as the basis for comparison with other European models of accountability.
