The School of Law is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Richard Bunworth as Assistant Professor in Intellectual Property Law. Richard will be lecturing in Intellectual Property Law, Industrial Property, and related subjects, as well as supervising dissertations on intellectual property, technology, and competition law.

A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, the University of Oxford, and King’s College London, Richard completed his PhD at University College Dublin as an Irish Research Council Postgraduate Scholar and Sutherland Doctoral Scholar.

Richard's research is primarily in the area of EU law, with a particular emphasis on competition law within the Union. In addition, he focuses on digital markets and emerging technologies and the ways in which intellectual property law and competition law should respond to the challenges posed. His research has been published in leading international journals, including the European Competition Law Review, the IIC - International Review of Intellectual Property and Competition Law, and the International Sports Law Journal.

Before returning to academia, Richard practised as a solicitor in one of Ireland's largest law firms, specialising in debt finance. In 2024, he was appointed as a Non-Governmental Advisor to the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, leading its work in the International Competition Network Mergers Working Group."
