European Studies is a broad-ranging and integrated programme that offers students the chance to learn European languages, and also study history and social sciences. This programme encourages students to think about our continent in all its complexity, and to analyse Europe’s cultures, history, and politics.
We offer a full-time, four-year undergraduate programme in European Studies, which coordinates the contribution of the Departments of French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Russian and Slavonic Studies (including Polish), History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Near and Middle Eastern Studies.
For postgraduate study there is a taught M.Phil. in Identities and Cultures of Europe offered by the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, and we welcome applications for postgraduate research at Ph.D. level.
The Centre for European Studies was established in 1987. The Director is Dr Clemens Ruthner.

European Studies is a unique course in the Irish University System. Each year, I was able to choose from a wide selection of modules on the cultural, political and linguistic evolution of Europe. Over my four years, I learned as much from my coursemates as I did in the classroom - comparing languages, our experiences abroad and our own academic projects. I highly recommend this course to anyone who has a wide range of academic interests.
