Outgoing Erasmus Students

Erasmus exchanges are arranged by individual schools with their partner institutions throughout the EU.  Please note that, in order to be eligible for Erasmus via School of English, you must have attained a II.1 or higher  result in your annual examinations in your JF year.

Joint Honours students are free to apply for Erasmus arranged by both or either of their departments,  but must have the approval of both departments to participate in an exchange. SH students with a major in another subject and a minor in English can apply for the English exchanges but will be given a lower priority.

Students from School of English can apply for  ELAN, COIMBRA, or CHARMS exchanges (which are separate from Erasmus but take place at universities within the EU) but need to make sure (i.e. research on their own) that the host universities they are interested in offer suitable English modules.

Applications for both Erasmus and non-EU international exchanges will be done via a central online application portal, which  will open later in October and will be available until November 14th.  The deadline for School of English Erasmus exchanges is also November 14th. Students wishing to submit applications for both international exchanges and Erasmus, must submit 2 separate applications.

The online application will be available here in October.

Material from Info sessions held by Global on October 1-2

Slide show and recording from the webinar about International exchanges and Erasmus organized for all students (i.e. not specific to English) by Global will be available here.

In the 2026-27 academic year, School of English will participate in Erasmus exchanges with the institutions listed in the table below.

While every effort will be made to accommodate student preferences, places on these exchanges are limited, and we cannot guarantee a place at one of your top choices. We therefore encourage every student to list on their applications up to 10 host universities they would be willing to consider.

Each of these institutions offers enough modules suitable for students of English literature, taught through English, to do either one term or whole year there. You do not need to know any other languages to participate in any of our Erasmus exchanges.

While the UK is not part of Erasmus, exchanges with the UK are still administered by the School and are applied for via the Erasmus application.

Joint Honours students should note that not all of these institutions will be considered suitable by their other department or will offer their other subject taught through English. For TJH students therefore communicating with both departments is crucial.

Funding is available to cover some of your travel and maintenance costs. The grant for a full academic year abroad varies depending on where you go, but most students can expect to receive in the region of €1,500. All Irish grants and scholarships (e.g. SUSI) continue to be paid while you are away on an Erasmus exchange.

Additional funding is available for students with disabilities to cover costs needed for various accommodations necessitated by the disability as well as for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
NO Erasmus funding for exchanges in the UK  isavailable but students going to the UK can apply for the same grants as students going on the non-EU exchange.

The School of English does NOT require you to take any specific modules while abroad and has no requirements to fulfil towards your English capstone. You will, however, be required to submit a Learning Agreement detailing all the modules you intend to study and outlining how many credits are available for each module, which will be reviewed by the Study Abroad Coordinator. Joint Honours students will need to have their Learning agreement approved by both Coordinators. At the end of the year (or semester), the Coordinator will convert your marks back into a Trinity grade.
