Funding Opportunities

The Department of Economics at Trinity College Dublin offers a range of funding supports for doctoral students. These include departmental scholarships open to applicants in all fields of economics, as well as a specialised studentship in economic history offered through the Centre for Economics, Policy and History (CEPH).

Departmental Scholarships

The Department awards a number of fully funded PhD scholarships each year. These typically include:

  • Tuition grants
  • Annual stipend
  • Opportunities for paid teaching and research assistantships

Funding is open to applicants in all areas of economics. All applicants to the PhD programme will automatically be considered for these scholarships if they submit a complete application by the funding deadline.

CEPH Studentship in Economic History

The Department also offers a fully funded PhD studentship through the Centre for Economics, Policy and History (CEPH) - a cross-institutional initiative linking Trinity and Queen’s University Belfast.

This studentship includes:

  • Full tuition fees for two years
  • Annual stipend of €25,000
  • €1,500 in research travel expenses
  • €5,000 mobility grant for an extended research visit to Queen’s University Belfast 

In years three and four, funding is provided by the Department of Economics, subject to progress, and includes full fees and a stipend.

Research focus:

The award supports doctoral research in economic history, particularly projects with policy relevance. Proposals may relate to one of the CEPH’s thematic areas:

  1. Institutions of growth and cooperation
  2. Development and wellbeing in comparative perspective
  3. Borders and the location of economic activity 

Applicants should submit a 2,000-word research proposal. A Master’s degree in economic history, economics, finance, or a related social science field is preferred.
