Assessment

Assessment for the MSc in Economics is based on a combination of coursework and a research dissertation. All components are carefully weighted and must be passed in order to complete the programme.

Overview

  • Students are assessed through a mix of continuous assessment, written examinations, and a dissertation.
  • The Court of Examiners meets in April to review coursework results and again in September to finalise overall grades following the assessment of dissertations.
  • A pass mark of 50% is required in each module and the dissertation.

Grading and Progression

  • All modules contribute to the final grade based on their ECTS weighting.
  • To be awarded the MSc, students must achieve:

- At least 50% in each module

- At least 50% in the dissertation

  • A distinction is awarded to students who achieve:

- An overall average of 70% or above, and

- 70% or above in the dissertation

Progression Rules

  • Students must pass all modules in order to proceed to the dissertation stage.
  • Students who fail the dissertation may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics, provided they have successfully completed 60 ECTS of taught modules.
  • Part-time students must achieve an overall average of 50% in all Year 1 modules to progress to Year 2.
