Europe’s housing crisis is real, but who’s responsible for solving it?

This was the thesis question of Professor Ronan Lyons' lecture, delivered to a packed Synge Theatre on Thursday 24 September. Professor Lyons used findings from his forthcoming book Brittle: How the Housing Crisis is Breaking Ireland and How to Fix It (published by Atlantic Books in October 2026) to explore one of the defining challenges of our time. He argued that the answer to this crisis lies not in choosing between the market and the state, but in encouraging both to pull in the same direction.

The talk was followed by a lively Q&A with the audience. Thanks to Professor Ronan Lyons for a fascinating evening and Professor Davide Romelli for hosting.

This lecture was part of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy’s Autumn Series, which continues on Thursday, 1 October, with Professor Adina Preda from the Department of Philosophy.
