On Sunday, 3 May 2026, Professor Tim Bodt, Deputy Director of the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS), met with a senior delegation from Shanghai University at Trinity College Dublin. The meeting focused on Asian studies–related issues and aimed to further strengthen academic exchange and cooperation between the two institutions.
The delegation was led by Professor Wu Jianyong, Chairman of Shanghai University, and included senior representatives from the University’s International Office, Graduate School, and Talent Service Office. Professor Shen Liang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at University College Cork (jointly established with Shanghai University), and Dr Wang Hongfei, Coordinator of TCAS, were also present at the meeting.
Following opening remarks, both sides engaged in productive discussions on areas of shared interest. Shanghai University expressed a strong interest in deepening cooperation with Trinity College Dublin, particularly in regional studies, Asian and Chinese studies, as well as joint research initiatives and academic publications. Potential collaboration mechanisms, including joint PhD training programmes, staff and student exchanges, and resource sharing, were also explored. In addition, the Shanghai University delegation introduced the University’s strengths in microelectronics, AI ethics, and biomedicine, highlighting opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. After the meeting, the delegation toured the Trinity campus, gaining further insight into the University’s teaching and research environment.
This meeting marks an important step toward strengthening academic ties between Trinity College Dublin and Shanghai University, with TCAS expected to play an active role in promoting future collaboration between the two institutions.
