This one-day workshop explores the intersections between dialectical materialism and philological practice, with particular attention to the work and legacy of Sebastiano Timpanaro. Bringing together perspectives from philology, linguistics and classical studies, the workshop considers how materialist philosophy can inform textual criticism, language study and the interpretation of ancient texts. It also examines the politics of classical reception, the material conditions of scholarship, and the growing prominence of Classics in contemporary Chinese intellectual and cultural discourse. The workshop will take place at the Trinity Long Room Hub, with Tom Geue, author of Major Corrections: An Intellectual Biography of Sebastiano Timpanaro (2025), joining online as keynote speaker.
