HI7122 Approaches to Historical Research: Archival Placement

Assessment: Students must complete the tasks assigned to them to the satisfaction of the host institution. Students are required to write an analytical review of the project with which they were involved.

This module introduces students to the environment in which historical materials are curated by cultural institutions such as libraries and archives. These practical insights can inform the planning and conduct of independent research projects, and will increase understanding of the frameworks within which historical material is made available for research purposes. The type of work engaged in could vary from cataloguing collections, to listing primary materials to checking data.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • appreciate and explain the challenges and issues facing archivists and other custodians of historical materials
  • appreciate and explain the nature of cataloguing and the procedures for ordering of research materials
  • demonstrate an awareness of the range of institutions and source materials available for the purposes of historical research
  • demonstrate a critical awareness of the interpretative problems source materials pose
