HI7103 Issues in Anglo-Irish relations, 1922-1979

The Famine

Assessment: Students will complete the equivalent of two essays of c.3,500 words. The first essay or equivalent assignments will be preliminary work. The second essay will carry the mark for the module.

This course will address key themes and issues in Anglo-Irish relations since 1920. The emphasis will be on the use of primary sources in the National Archives and other repositories, and student assignments will reflect this. Amongst matters to be considered will be:

  • The diplomacy of separation and partition, 1920-1925
  • Irish sovereignty, the British empire and the international system, 1922-1936
  • The Anglo-Irish security relationship, 1922-1938
  • Neutrality, partition and the Second World War, 1939-1945
  • Anglo-Irish relations in the post-war era, 1945-1957
  • Ireland, Britain and international politics, 1950-1969
  • Ireland, Britain and Northern Ireland, 1949-1973
  • Ireland, Britain and European integration, 1957-1972
