'Religious Comprehension in Post-Revolutionary Scotland: Settling the Quiet and Peace of the Church in Argyll, 1692-1695'
My work examines how the state attempted to incorporate Scottish Episcopal ministers into the newly re-established Presbyterian national church in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1688-89. It deals specifically with how one attempt at comprehension in the form of the 1693 Act for Settling the Quiet and Peace of the Church was viewed through the Argyll region. It will question whether comprehension was possible in such a fraught religious landscape by examining literary sources as well as church and state records.
