Research

‘Marie Antoinette and English Loyalist propaganda during the French Revolution’
My thesis considers how Marie Antoinette was represented by English loyalist propaganda during the French Revolution. While the deluge of propaganda against Marie Antoinette in France is well known, in England a different picture of the Queen emerged. After her death in 1793, popular public sentiment in England was almost reverential, and in the months following her death there was an eruption of sympathy towards her. My research will analyse the changing representation of Marie Antoinette in English print.
