Research

'Journeys of the Mind: reading English travel literature'
My research focuses on popular printed travel literature published from the late sixteenth century and its usage by well-educated readers and scholars. I will examine the ways in which non-European religious practices and cultures were portrayed in this literature and how this information was deployed in the political and philosophical debates of English intellectuals including John Locke and Edward Stillingfleet. My sources will include both printed travel texts as well as other publications that made use of these texts. My other areas of interest range from Ancient Rome, to Reformation history, to Central European history, with a particular interest in the Habsburg dynasty.
