Universities Ireland, which promotes collaboration between universities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the Electricity Supply Board (ESB), the largest energy company on the island of Ireland, are offering five scholarships to students undertaking a recognised Master's or the first year of a PhD programme (taught or research) in the other Irish jurisdiction. Dublin Institute of Technology and the Open University in Ireland are also partners in this scheme, which has been running since 2005.

These scholarships are worth €15,000 (approx. Stg £12,500) each. This year three of the scholarships will be in the areas of energy and engineering, and will be co-sponsored by Universities Ireland and ESB. Two more will be in another area - arts, business, science and social science - and will be funded by Universities Ireland alone. These scholarships must be taken up for the academic year 2012-2013.

The aim of this scheme is to encourage outstanding students from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to cross the border to undertake postgraduate study and experience life in the other Irish jurisdiction. Because it is 50% sponsored by ESB, there is a particular emphasis this year on the areas of energy and engineering, and the scheme aims to help build all-island innovation in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) which will be crucial in moving the island towards the kind of sustainable knowledge society that is vital both for its future prosperity and environmental sustainability. It is thus a scheme which has been conceived both to support the continuing peace process in Northern Ireland and to train highly skilled postgraduates to contribute to a new phase of economic and environmental development for the island as a whole.

The closing date for applications for this scholarship scheme will be Friday, 25th May 2012 (5.00pm)

Teach Abroad Scholarship

In response to the rise in Graduate unemployment and the continuing weakness in the domestic graduate job market, ELC has developed a Graduate TESOL Programme. TESOL (also known as TEFL) is the acronym for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and there is a tremendous global demand for trained TESOL teachers.

As a Social Enterprise, our profits are re-invested back into providing employment and training opportunities, and we are therefore able to offer a number of Full Scholarships onto the Programme. Although primarily aimed at unemployed Graduates, Undergraduates are also eligible to apply for a scholarship and Final Year students in particular are encouraged to apply.

In order to be considered for the next round of Scholarships, please send your CV and cover letter asap.

Our Programme consists of two key strands:

1. A 120-150 hour distance-learning Diploma TESOL Course; giving participants the skills, confidence, and qualifications necessary for TEFL work abroad.

2. A Job Advisory Service providing expert support to help participants find work and choose the most appropriate position for them personally. We work with quality Schools and Agencies throughout the world to make sure our students get the opportunity to apply for the pick of some of the best English Language teaching jobs around.

The specific duties and remuneration you can expect when teaching abroad obviously varies depending on a range of factors, for example: location, size of school, type of school (private or state), age of students etc. One of the key roles of our Job Advisory Service is to help you decide what would suit you best.

For more information about the Programme please take a look at our website at: www.englishlanguagecentre.org

Person requirements

Basic Requirements:
• English as a first language
• Graduate or Undergraduate
• Good communication skills
• Enthusiasm about living and working abroad

Applications will be judged on their own merits and we do not wish to be overly prescriptive in terms of what we are looking for. Essentially, we want to know why you want to teach abroad and why you believe you should receive a Scholarship place. Enthusiasm and commitment are more important than previous teaching experience (though that may also be taken into account), and we would like to encourage as many people as possible from all disciplines to apply.

Company information

ELC is a registered Community Interest Company (CIC) - which means that all profits are re-invested back into helping more people.

Our priority is to provide innovative training and employment opportunities, with a particular focus on tackling youth and graduate unemployment regionally and nationally.
ELC was started by the senior team of one of the longest established specialist English language providers in the UK – English Language Centre Online. After more than 20 years providing English language training and consultancy across the world, we decided it was time to give something significant back, and ELC CIC is the result.

As regards TESOL, our senior team have successfully delivered TESOL training programmes and employment opportunities to over 6000 people worldwide.
