This presentation examines translanguaging from the perspective of vulnerable minority languages such as Basque and Irish. It explores the implications of translanguaging for minority language sustainability, focusing on language identity and the potential opportunities and risks for languages such as Basque and Irish. It argues for the importance of naming languages and of maintaining processes of standardization and the development of academic language in extending minority languages into domains traditionally dominated by majority languages. A central issue is how to balance multilingual pedagogies with the need for “breathing spaces” for minority languages: spaces where these languages can be used freely and are not displaced by other languages. The presentation considers how pedagogical translanguaging can contribute to achieving this balance. It concludes by emphasizing the need to consider the specific historical, sociolinguistic, and pedagogical conditions in which translanguaging takes place.
