The Value of Libraries in the 21st Century

Date: 28 Jan - 28 Jan 2026
Time: 17:00 - 18:00
Venue: Neill Lecture Theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub

A panel discussion organised by the Centre for the Book Seminar Series.

The Trinity Centre for the Book is pleased to welcome all to a panel discussion on the value of libraries in the 21st century.
In the era of smart phones, digital media, TikTok, and fake news, the practice of reading and the format of reading material has shifted drastically. How do libraries deal with these challenges? And where lies the value of the traditional book?

For this panel discussion we are joined by the following honoured guests:
Helen Shenton, Librarian and College Archivist, Trinity College Library
Siobhan McCrystal, Executive Librarian, Mobile Libraries Service, South Dublin County Council
Kathleen Moran, National Coordinator, JCSP Demonstration Library Project
Nuala Canny, Library and Collections, Farmleigh House and Estate

This event is part of the Trinity Centre for the Book Research Seminar Series. The monthly seminars take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 5pm in the Neil Lecture theatre, Trinity Long Room Hub. For more about the activities of the Centre for the Book see www.tcd.ie/thebook.
