Our speakers have each chosen a Greek word, and share their insights on its roots & meanings.
UNESCO has formally designated February 9th as World Greek Language Day. To celebrate this we are pleased to invite you to join us on February 12, 2026. In this event we will reflect on the ongoing life and use of Greek language in the context of the many words and terms that have Greek roots that are used in English. Our panel of speakers have each chosen a Greek word or short phrase (from both modern Greek and ancient Greek): one that they find interesting, and which also has an ongoing 'life' within English vocabulary or expressions. They will each speak for 4-5 minutes, and there will be time to discuss and ask questions.

This event is run in accordance with Trinity’s Dignity and Respect policy, and its commitment to nurturing a respectful and inclusive research culture.
Please indicate if you have any access requirements, such as ISL/English interpreting, so that we can facilitate you in attending this event. Contact: CMORRIS@tcd.ie
