The Archive of Decolonization in North Africa
A lecture by Dr Idriss Jebari (Department for Near and Middle Eastern Studies) for the International History Research Seminar Series.
“Departing from the newly released monograph “Leaping Decolonization” (Cambridge University Press, 2026), this talk will retrace the author’s journey toward the excavation of the “archive of decolonization” in North Africa. It interrogates the value of periodicals and critical essays from the 1960s and 1970s, first as sites where imaginations of alternative futures were being elaborated after the end of French colonialism, and second, as material traces of a recent past long kept silenced by authoritarian repression in the region.
Idriss Jebari is Assistant Professor in Near & Middle Eastern Studies at TCD.
