On this, the 250th anniversary of the birth of the American nation, this lecture will explore the tangled story of Irish involvement in the American Revolution.
It will recount some of the notable Irishmen and women who participated, along with the faceless many who helped make independence a reality. In doing so, it will provide a new perspective on how Irish involvement helped make the American Revolution the complicated event that it was.
Professor Patrick Griffin is Madden-Hennebry Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame and Bye-Fellow at St Edmund's College, the University of Cambridge. One of the leading historians of the early modern Atlantic world, he is the author of several influential books, including The Age of Atlantic Revolution: The Fall and Rise of a Connected World, and America’s Revolution.
