A lecture by Dr Judy Bolger and Patrick Duffy as part of the Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series.

Judy Bolger: "Strong impressions are made by the sad cases that are known of infants born in the workhouse": Illegitimacy and infant care in the early twentieth-century Irish workhouse.
Dr Judy Bolger lecturers at Carlow College, St Patrick’s and works in the Academic Resource Office supporting student learning. She recently completed her PhD in history at Trinity College Dublin (2025). She is the Book Review Editor for the Women’s History Association of Ireland and contributes to international research networks on healthcare and infant care. Her publications focus on women, motherhood, and institutional life in modern Irish history.

Patrick Duffy: Frontier politics in the age of O'Connell: County Monaghan, Protestant Ulster and Catholic Ireland, 1824-44.
Patrick Duffy had recently submitted a PhD thesis funded by a Research Ireland Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship investigating the emergence of a north-south frontier in response to Daniel O'Connell's Catholic emancipation and repeal campaigns.

The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. It provides a forum for discussion and dissemination of new ideas, perspectives, and research on Irish history, Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. All are welcome.
