The Institute Board is our governance body and meets three to four times a year.

Professor Rick Rylance was appointed chair of the Institute Board in October 2024. Professor Rylance is an Emeritus Professor of English literature. During his distinguished career, he has held senior positions at the Universities of Exeter and Anglia Ruskin as well as national and international roles, including Board membership of the Global Research Council. He was Dean of the School of Advanced Study (the only nationally funded hub for the humanities in the UK) and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of London, CEO of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and Executive Chair of Research Councils UK (RCUK).

Previous Chairs include Mr Bill Emmott (2018 to 2024), and Professor Geoffrey Crossick (2010 to 2018).

The Hub’s Institute Board comprises up to five external members, the Dean of Research, AHSS Faculty Dean, and representatives of our constituent partners. It approves policy and strategy, monitors progress and how risks are being addressed, evaluates our added value and governance, and advises how best to sustain our activities.
